The Junior Year Abroad is a unique programme which combines English language courses with academic studies. The programme is designed to meet your needs according to your level of English and academic interests.

Intensive and Pre-sessional English and academic course packages

You can study a range of different online or on campus English language preparation courses, which upon successful completion continue onto academic study for either the autumn semester only or the full academic year.

  • Intensive and Pre-sessional English courses

    16 weeks on campus Pre-sessional English courses
    Dates: 6 May to 29 August 2025
    Break: 16 to 20 June 2025
    Requirement: IELTS 5.0 overall, with 5.0 in writing and 4.5 in all other sections
    Tuition fee: £6,881

    16 weeks on campus Intensive English and Pre-sessional English course
    Dates: 6 May to 29 August 2025
    Requirement: IELTS 4.5 overall, with 4.5 in each section
    Tuition: £6,623

    10 weeks on campus Pre-sessional English course
    Dates: 23 June to 29 August 2025
    Requirement: IELTS 5.0 overall, with no less than 5.0 in each section
    Tuition fee: £4,271

    8 weeks online English course
    Dates: 30 June to 22 August 2025
    Requirement: IELTS 5.0 overall, with no less than 5.0 in each section
    Tuition fee: £3,480

    5 weeks on campus Pre-sessional English course
    Dates: 28 July to 29 August 2025
    Requirement: IELTS 5.5 overall, with no less than 5.0 in each section
    Tuition fee: £2,070

  • Academic semester and year courses

    Autumn semester 2025
    Dates: 20 September to 12 December 2025
    Requirements: Successful completion of English preparation course and at least one year of undergraduate study with a GPA of 2.8 or above
    Tuition fee: £10,750

    Full year 2025/26
    Dates: 20 September 2025 to 30 May 2026
    Requirements: Successful completion of English preparation course and at least one year of undergraduate study with a GPA of 2.8 or above
    Tuition fee: £21,500

How to apply

You must complete the Junior Year Abroad application form [PDF 3MB] and return it to Inbound.SussexAbroad@sussex.ac.uk with supporting documents:

  • transcript
  • IELTS
  • academic reference
  • copy of passport

You will be asked to complete a separate application and to pay a fee deposit for the English course.
