Grief
Angelina Cunningham
There is no one definition when it comes to grief. The scale of emotion is as vast as the landscape and as unique to everyone as the clouds on any given day. In this series of work the artist explored the conventional stages of grief as documented by psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (1969). The stages cover denial, anger, depression, bargaining and acceptance. The artist added a sixth stage influenced purely by her own personal experience of losing a loved one to remain authentic to herself. Avoiding descriptive subject matter, the work uses abstract imagery to pass the responsibility of the images over to the viewer. This allows for complete personal interpretation and for the audience to resonate with elements which remind them of their own experiences.
