Arranging for Songs and Ensembles (W3076)

15 credits, Level 4

Spring teaching

This module will do three things: (1) increase your knowledge of scoring and arranging techniques by studying classic pieces; (2) increase your knowledge and understanding of music by studying a very wide range of music relevant to contemporary creative musicians; and (3) apply what you have learnt through a report, and practical exercises including a portfolio.

This module focuses on voicing and instrumentation in a wide of different musical genres. Through close study of different kinds of music, you will understand technical methods and link them to their changing historical and social contexts while gaining vital skills in music's practice and craft.

We will look at classical, jazz, experimental and world musics for connections and commonalities; use instrumentation and voicing creatively to devise ways to understand and appreciate originality in music today; and gain insights from all kinds of practice, from recent to 1000 years ago.
