Our online Mathematics SKE course is designed to develop mathematical concepts at a deeper level, and to see beyond the ‘rules’ and conventions we have become comfortable with, giving a different perspective on the learning of Mathematics.

Study a Mathematics SKE course at Sussex
Taught by experienced practitioners demonstrating techniques and sharing resources that can be used in the classroom, you will leave the course feeling well prepared for starting your teacher traiining.
You will learn key concepts, deepen your understanding of the subject and improve your maths skills alongside like-minded people.
You will be assessed through a number of different methods, including a subject knowledge audit and an individual portfolio of your own subject knowledge development.
Course structure
The Sussex online Mathematics SKE is available as an eight,12,16, 20, 24 or 28-week course.
Once you have enrolled, you will be able to select from the following four-week units:
- Core Unit 1 (KS3/4 level)
- Core Unit 2 (KS3/4 level)
- Numbers and Algebra (KS4/5 level)
- Geometry and Measure (KS4/5 level)
- Graphs (KS4/5 level)
- Statistics and Mechanics (KS4/5 level)
- Preparing to Teach (KS4/5 level)
Eligibility and funding
SKE courses are funded by the Department for Education (DfE) if you have been offered a place on a PGCE course with enrolment on an SKE course as a condition of acceptance.

Self-funding your SKE
We also offer a self-funded SKE route for:
- teacher trainees who are not eligible for DfE funding
- qualified teachers who want to teach a new subject, or refresh their subject knowledge before returning to teaching after a break
- anyone considering teaching as a new career who wants to increase their subject knowledge before applying for teacher training.
